This investment makes it possible to meet the company`s research and development objectives, ensuring the cementing of our technology. Among the main investments are the installation of our first R&D unit, scheduled to open in 2024, and the construction of our first large-scale industrial unit, scheduled to open at the end of 2025, a unit designed to produce dozens of tons of insect-derived products per month, mainly for healthy, tasty and sustainable human food.

A Thunder Foods apresentou um dos seus trabalhos de investigação com o título "Tenebrio molitor rearing using Agri-Food By-Products: Circular economy approach in the new insect bioindustry" nas Jornadas da Alimentação Animal, organizadas pela IACA e pelo FeedInov CoLab.
O congresso que decorreu a 18 e 19 de setembro no Convento de São Francisco, em Santarém, reuniu vários stakeholders do setor agropecuário e permitiu expor uma das linhas de investigação da Thunder Foods que visa tornar mais circular e sustentável um setor tão importante para Portugal.

Thunder Foods presented one of its research papers entitled ‘Tenebrio molitor rearing using Agri-Food By-Products: Circular economy approach in the new insect bioindustry’ at the Animal Feed Conference, organised by IACA and FeedInov.
The conference, which took place on 18 and 19 September at the Convento de São Francisco in Santarém, brought together various stakeholders from the agricultural sector and provided an opportunity to showcase one of Thunder Foods' lines of research, which aims to make such an important sector for Portugal more circular and sustainable.

⚡InFishMix Project is officially completed⚡
InFishMix project (PT-INNOVATION-0094), funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants, has officially ended. In response to the growing demand for protein-rich products, InFishMix project has pioneered the exploration of alternative protein sources, with insects taking the center stage, as for the potential to offer a substantial health benefits for farmed animals but also representing a groundbreaking ingredient for aquafeeds.
The project used innovative techniques, utilizing by-products from the agro-industry as substrates. This not only maximized protein yield but also delivered a positive environmental impact. In the project, Insects based protein mixes were tailored specifically to Atlantic salmon and European seabass, effectively substituting conventional protein sources in aquafeeds.
Throughout the project, we conducted thorough evaluations of the substrates, insects, and fish health and performance to guarantee the highest standards of fish welfare and consumer safety. The research also assessed the impact of insect-based feed on stress response and gill osmoregulatory functions in salmon, addressing the gap in comprehensive studies on these critical aspects.
As far as we know this was the first project evaluating the combine use of two insect products, obtained from Black Soldier Fly and Tenebrio molitor, mixing this products to obtain a better solution for fish feed formulations. Insect products,, combined or isolated, are ideal nutritional sources for both seabass and salmon production with large industry-scale potential!
Thank you to all partners for this great experience , this was a great consortium led by Thunder Foods, but also enrolling another insect production company, EntoGreen, and three research centers, two from Portugal, Egas Moniz School of Health & Science and CIIMAR, and one from Norway, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre.

Foi atribuída uma bolsa de doutoramento no ramo não académico em engenharia química ao Pedro Moleiro para a realização de trabalhos com a Thunder Foods tendo como tema: “Tecnologia sustentável e escalável para a extração proteínas de Tenebrio molitor usando soluções aquosas de líquidos iónicos de base biológica”.
O projeto é realizado em parceria com o CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials - Universidade de Aveiro e o Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde – Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa planeando neste contexto fazer a implementação de solventes alternativos e sustentáveis para o desenvolvimento de novas e mais eficazes metodologias para a extração de proteína, visando a sua aplicação à escala industrial, esperando proporcionar uma mais-valia na produção de novos produtos à base de insetos.

Pedro Moleiro has been awarded a non-academic #PhD scholarship in chemical engineering to carry out work with Thunder Foods on the topic: "Sustainable and scalable technology for the extraction of proteins from Tenebrio molitor using aqueous solutions of bio-based ionic liquids".
The project is being carried out in partnership with CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials - Universidade de Aveiro and the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry (Laboratório Associado para a Química Verde (LAQV/REQUIMTE) - Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa).
